You can ride with cash, but using a pass is faster and easier.
Paying with cash
Yes, you can pay with cash on the bus—but you must have exact change. Bus drivers will not provide change back.
- Drivers do not give change
- Insert coins or bills into the farebox when you board
- Cash is accepted for full or reduced passes
💡 Tip: Cash payments can slow down boarding. A pass lets you board quickly and easily.
Buying a pass
You can buy a pass before you ride or use a mobile pass on your phone.
Ways to buy a pass:
- rideRTC app – Buy and store a digital pass on your phone
- Ticket vending machines – Available at major stops and transit centers
- Retail locations – Buy a paper pass at participating stores
- On the bus (with cash) – Buy a 2-hour or 24-hour pass with exact change
Discounted passes are available for seniors, veterans, students, and riders with disabilities. Be sure to bring your valid RTC ID card if you’re using a reduced pass.
